Social media that’s finger lickin’ good!

We love a clever Social Media campaign and this one just about takes the cake… er, drumstick.

Follower counts on Twitter are nothing new, but one corporate account is gaining a lot of attention for a well-crafted joke.

KFC had a hidden gag on their twitter account – that once found, exploded into likes and shares.

An eagle eyed twitter user noticed that the KFC Twitter account only follows 11 people. Five of them are former members of the Spice Girls. The other six include a famous musician, a Santa Clara University head coach, a member of the Green Bay Packers, a Los Angeles City Council president, a journalist, and a martial artist.

You’d think KFC would follow many more people. After all, they serve millions of people every day. However, for quite some time, they’ve only followed these people. And finally someone noted it and made comment.

Here’s a clue.

All of the latter share one thing: the given name of Herb.

The gag.

KFC is known for their special recipe, which is comprised of 11 herbs and spices.

So when Twitter user Mike Edgette “Edge” @edgette22 questioned KFC about their small followers, his tweet “Those 11 people? 5 Spice Girls and 6 guys named Herb. 11 Herbs & Spices. I need time to process this” went insanely viral as others picked up on the joke. To date, his tweet has been retweeted over 300,000 times.

This has drummed up a lot of publicity for KFC. And deservedly so. It’s a clever campaign.

The reward

So how did KFC reward their clever twitterer? Edgette received 52 x $5 KFC gift cards plus a painting depicting the Colonel giving him a piggy back while he holds a drumstick.

The paintings, to us, seems an anti-climax to a great social media promotion. Perhaps KFC should have given him the secret 11 herbs and spices recipe!
